Your Olin Network Password

What you should know

Your password is used to log into your on-domain Windows laptop as well as accessing a variety of Olin College resources and services such as: internal wireless networks, network file shares, printing, email, the Olin portal and a variety of others. Through the use of your network account and password, all of these resources are available via any Windows, Apple or Linux based computer as well as a variety of mobile hardware such as iPads, iPhones, and Android devices.

Are there minimum requirements for my password?

Yes! To help ensure the security of network accounts, all passwords must meet the following complexity and security requirements.

  1. It must contain a minimum of 8 characters
  2. It must meet at least 3 of the following complexity requirements:
    • Uppercase letter (A – Z)
    • Lowercase letter (a – z)
    • Number (0 – 9)
    • Non alphanumeric special character (~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * _ - + = ` | \ ( ) { } [ ] : ; ' < > , . ? / ) etc.
  3. It cannot contain your name or username
  4. It cannot repeat any of your last 4 passwords
  5. You must change it at least once every 180 days

How do I create a good password that meets the requirements?

Creating a good, complex password that meets the minimum requirements is easier than you think. Please remember to create one others can’t easily guess. Here are some suggestions;

What effect might using off-domain systems, mobile devices or stored passwords have on my account?

Many devices (Apple, Linux or Windows based computers, and mobile devices such as iPads, iPhones, Android and other smart phones) and various applications allow you to store accounts and passwords. These devices and/or applications automatically retry accessing services such as email or connecting to wireless networks with stored accounts and passwords. This may result in account lockouts due to unsuccessful login attempts following a password change if certain steps aren’t taken when changing your password. If you use any of these devices to access Olin services, please be sure to visit our password change guide prior to changing your password.

How will I know when my password is expiring?

Our password management system will send you an email notification informing you of your pending password expiration every day beginning 14 days from expiration. Additionally, if you’re using a windows based system configured on the Olin domain, you will receive a popup notice after logging in within 14 days of expiration.
