COMSOL Multiphysics v4.2

Installation instructions

  1. IE users may click on the following link to begin the installation process, for any browser you will need to copy & paste it into the Run box (Start→Run… OR: Windows Key + R): \\stuapp\NETAPPS\COMSOLMultiphysics\4.2\setup.exe
  2. In the Installer window, Click New Installation
  3. In the License Section of the Installer window:
    1. Click to Accept license agreement
    2. In the lower half of the window, Under License Format, Select <port number> @ <hostname> and use the

following information

  1. In the Port Number box, enter: 1718
  2. In the Host Name box, enter: STUAPP.OLIN.EDU
  3. Click Check button to verify that it can communicate with the license server
  4. The License information screen will indicate whether or not you were able to connect to the licensing server as well as what modules we are licensed for.
    • If you receive any errors, contact the IT Help Desk
  5. Click Close in the License Information window to return to the Installer window
  6. In the Name box, enter: Your Name
  7. In the Company box, enter: Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering
    • NOTE: If you need additional assistance, have questions or just wish to review it, you can click on the View Install.pdf button in the lower left corner of the screen to browse the complete installation guide.
  8. Click Next
  9. In the Platforms section:
    1. Leave all default items checked
    2. Click Next
  10. In the Features section of the Installer window:
    1. Under Quick Selection: Select Full Installation (This should be the default)
    2. Destination Folder: Leave default of C:\COMSOL42
  11. Click Next
  12. In the Options section of the Installer window:
  13. Enable/disable creation of shortcuts as you desire
  14. Leave Associate the .mph file type with this COMSOL 4.2 installation and Install DirectX runtime binaries enabled. (If they are not enabled by default, enable them.
  15. Disable Enable automatic check for updates
    1. Updates will be applied manually
  16. LiveLink for MATLAB Interface (if you wish to be able to use COMSOL with MATLAB - you must already have MATLAB installed). If not, click Cancel to abort the installation and proceed with installing MATLAB before attempting to install COMSOL again.
  17. Matlab Installation root - Browse to your local MATLAB installation to select the path (it should be C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2011a\ or C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2011b\ depending on version)
  18. Click Next
  19. In the Install Section:
  20. Click Install
  21. Click Finish when complete
  22. After completing the installation, you will need to patch COMSOL to the latest update:

\\stuapp\NETAPPS\COMSOLMultiphysics\4.2\updates\comsol_4.2.0.171_win.exe

  • Allow the self-extractor to unzip the files to the default folder
  • patching is finished upon completing the unzip.

Please note that when you wish to run this application you must use the shortcut for, COMSOL Multiphysics 4.2 (Classkit License)
