Clearing browser cache

Users may occasionally need to clear out their local web browser data caches if they are experiencing issues with sites not loading or operating properly in one browser, while others may be unaffected. This is not an uncommon occurance after there have been server side updates to a website.

Internet Explorer

  • Click on the gear icon in the top right corner of an IE browser window
  • From the menu list that appears, select Internet Options
  • In the General tab of the new window that appears, click on the “Delete…” button
  • For Cognos Reports:
    • Uncheck “Preserve Favorites website data”
    • Leave the checkboxes “Temporary Internet files and website files” & “Cookies and website data” marked for deletion
    • Uncheck “History”
    • The remaining boxes may be left as-is (default unchecked) unless you are specifically directed to do so by IT staff
  • Click on the “Delete” button
  • Click on the “OK” button
  • Close out all IE tabs & windows and restart the browswer to complete clearing

Firefox

  • Click on the three horizontal bar icon in the top right corner of a Firefox browser window
  • From the menu that appears, select Options
  • A new tab will open. From the options on the left hand panel, select Privacy
  • Select “clear your recent history
  • From the new window that opens, leave the Time range to clear dropdown box to “Everything”
  • By default, all items are checked. Uncheck the following:
    • Browsing & Download History
    • Form & Search History
    • Site Preferences
  • Click “Clear Now
  • Close out all Firefox tabs & windows and restart the browswer to complete clearing

Chrome

  • Click on the Options icon in the top right corner of a Chrome browser window
    • This button will either show as three horizontal bars, three dots stacked vertically or a colored arrow if your browser is waiting to restart for pending updates
  • From the menu list that appears, select Settings
  • A new tab will open. From the options on the left hand panel, select History
  • Select “Clear browsing data…
  • From the new window that opens, change the Obliterate the following items dropdown box to “the beginning of time”
  • Make sure that the following boxes are checked off; the remaining boxes do not need to be marked:
    • Cookies and other site and plugin data
    • Cached images and files
    • Hosted app data
  • Click “Clear browsing data
  • Close out all Chrome tabs & windows and restart the browswer to complete clearing
