OS X Network Printing at Olin

Note: these instructions were written for Macintosh OS X 10.6 and above, some steps may be different for previous versions of OS X.

Installing the appropriate printer

  • If you don't know what version of OS X you're using:
    • Click The Apple logo in the upper left hand corner.
    • Select About This Mac and you will see the version number under the big Apple logo in the window that pops up.
  • If you don't know the model of the printer you're trying to print to:
  1. Mount the .dmg file and run the installer that it contains following the onscreen instructions.
  2. You will be prompted that the package contains a program that determines if the software can be installed…
  3. Click Continue
  4. At the Introduction screen, click Continue
  5. At the License screen, click Continue. Agree to the licensing terms
  6. At the Installation Type screen, click Install
  7. You may be prompted for your administrative password, enter it and click OK
  8. It may take time, but you should receive a message informing you that the install succeeded.
  9. Click Close

The new printer will now show up in the Printer List. If you have more than one printer installed, you may select one to be the default printer by using the corresponding drop down box on the Print & Fax screen.

Adding Printers by IP

There is a good chance that no printers will show up in your printer list. In this likely case, you will have to add the printer you want to print to by its IP address.

Every Olin printer has its IP address printed on a sticker on the physical printer itself.

First, make sure you are connected to the internal Olin wifi network (SSID: OLIN) and not OLIN-GUEST. Otherwise nothing will work.

  1. Visit the printer you would like to print to and write down its IP address.
  2. In System Preferences, select Printers & Scanners
  3. Click the + button on the printer list and select Add Printer or Scanner…
  4. In the Add window that pops up, click IP on the top toolbar.
  5. In the Address bar, enter the IP address of the printer that you wrote down and press enter.
  6. If the Use dropdown menu at the bottom is automatically set to Generic PostScript Printer,
    • Click it and select Select Printer Software…
    • Search for the printer's model number and select the correct driver.
  7. Click Add and the printer should be successfully added!
