Intel Optimus Technology

The Dell Latitude E6420 and E6430 laptops come with Intel Optimus technology. If this technology is for any reason disabled, you may experience occasional blue screens while connecting to campus projection systems. Following these steps will enable this battery saving technology on your computers and get appropriate drivers software installed:

Enable Optimus

  • Please reboot your computer, and at the POST screen with the encircled Dell logo press the F2 key to enter BIOS setup
  • Once the BIOS loads, please scroll down to and expand the Video category on the left hand side
  • Under Video, select Optimus
    • If Optimus is not enabled, please enable it.
    • Press Apply
  • Press Exit, your computer will reboot to enable this display technology.
  • When Windows gets to the login screen, the resolution will be very low. Upon logging in, your computer may prompt you to reboot; this can be ignored for now.
  • The latest video drivers may be installed via the shortcuts stored under the following network locations
  • It is recommended that the Intel drivers are installed first followed by the nVidia driver
  • Your computer will need to reboot between each driver installation.

Intel Driver installation

  • Click Yes on any User Account Control popup windows you may receive
  • Accept the defaults at the opening screen and click Next
  • Click Yes to accept the License Agreement
  • Click Next at the Readme File Information screen
  • Click Next after prompted to do so at the Setup Progress window
  • Click Finish to reboot your computer

nVidia Driver installation

  • Click Yes on any User Account Control popup windows you may receive
  • Click Agree and Continue at the license agreement screen
  • Use Express settings and click Next at the Installation options screen
  • Click Restart Now after the installation completes
