**Instability in SOLIDWORKS 2015 due to conflict with Microsoft KB3072630**

From the SolidWorks KB article:

There is a conflict with Microsoft KB3072630 (published July 14 2015) which can cause SOLIDWORKS to become unstable when installed or updated after KB3072630 is applied. The Microsoft update makes changes to Windows Installer which prevents SOLIDWORKS installations (new, modify/repair, update or uninstall) from being executed correctly. We are working diligently to produce a software fix as soon as possible in SOLIDWORKS 2015 and 2016, however in the interim please review the information below to prevent and correct instability caused by this conflict.

Affected software

  • SOLIDWORKS 2011 - 2015, and SOLIDWORKS 2016 beta.

Instability may appear in many different functional areas of the software, so the list below may not be complete. Known symptoms are:

  • Missing add-ins from the SOLIDWORKS add-ins list in the Tools menu.
  • Error when launching SOLIDWORKS or opening a file: “Could not load SOLIDWORKS DLL: GdtAnalysisSupport.dll”.
  • Crashes when recording, playing or editing a SOLIDWORKS Macro.
  • Instability when using Equations.
  • Error when launching SOLIDWORKS or SOLIDWORKS Explorer: “DWG document manager library is invalid or missing”.

SolidWorks is working on fixing the issue and integrating it with their installer, Olin's one-click installer will be updated at such time. Until then, the Windows registry must be patched in order to allow a successful installation, and then patched again following the installation to re-enable the Microsoft update we are temporarily disabling with the first patch.

Browsing to the following folder from the start menu: \\fsvs01\Applications\Public\netapps\SolidWorks\2015\KB3072630_Workaround

and running the KB3072630_Disable.reg file will patch your computer's registry to allow SolidWorks to install properly (you will need to allow any UAC prompts you may receive, etc.)

After completing the installation, you may run the KB3072630_Re-enable file.

Installing SolidWorks 2016

  1. Copy and paste the following link into the Run command from the Start Menu: \\fsvs01\Applications\Public\netapps\SolidWorks\2016\SP04\StartSWInstall.hta
    • Note: this installer will determine if you run a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system and install the appropriate edition for you.
  2. The Solidworks Master Setup window should open.
  3. Click the Install Solidworks button. This will install the entire suite of applications.
  4. Please note that this is a silent installation and will proceed without giving the user any options.
    1. :!: If your system is low on disk space, the installation may quit unexpectedly without giving an error code.
  5. Once all applications have been installed you’ll see a window indicating that the SolidWorks installation is complete. Uncheck the Run SolidWorks now box and Click Done
