Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) issues
Apple's recently released OS upgrade to v10.11, named El Capitan, causes issues with MS Office for Mac versions 2011 and 2016. Wide spread reporting indicates problems with all Office for Mac (2011 / 2016) applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
We strongly recommend users not upgrade to this latest OS X release (El Capitan) if you are running any MS Office for Mac version on your system. Users should be backing up their systems regularly in order to recover easily from unexpected system/application issues. A backup should be performed before any significant system upgrade as a precaution.
Users who have upgraded their system(s) and are experiencing difficulty with Outlook in particular, have two options:
- Use Olin College's webmail (https://webmail.olin.edu) until a fix is made available
- Perform an OS downgrade to OS X v10.10. Unfortunately, this is a more complex solution since it requires overwriting your system with a new OS installation. This should also not be attempted unless you have a known good backup of all your data from which you can restore it after the downgrade.
Users having difficulty and in need of further assistance should contact the IT Help Desk for help.
Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) Fix
Microsoft has released the Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 14.5.6 update.
Issues that the update fixes: This update provides the following fixes to improve Mac OS X El Capitan compatibility:
The hang situation that occurs during an account sync operation in Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2011 is fixed. This problem is described in
